I train regularly and suffer with a lot of muscle tension / soreness. Will sports massage relieve this?List Item 4
Good massage techniques are a wonderful way of releasing trigger points, stretching and elongating muscles and breaking down adhesions. The therapist can focus on areas that are stiff, injured or just plain sore. By increasing the blood flow to the tissues and releasing the tension, massage not only helps alleviate the pain, but can also help eliminate toxins and oxygenate the cells. Think of your body like a car, a regular MOT and servicing helps to keep everything running smoothly.

What are the benefits of Remedial Massage?
Remedial Massage helps in many ways including; correcting problems in your body, stress reduction, immunity boosting, increased mental alertness, releases muscle tension and pain, increases joint mobility, improves posture and skin tone. Studies have also shown that remedial massage provides positive benefits for many health disorders including, insomnia, headaches, depression and anxiety, back pain, sciatica, arthritis, high blood pressure, chronic pain or constipation.

Is Sports Massage painful?
At certain points during the massage, you may feel some discomfort or even some pain as the massage therapist works on areas where there are adhesions or scar tissue. You should always tell your massage therapist if you feel pain during the massage so they can adjust their technique or further prepare the tissues if the superficial muscles are tense. Pain isn't necessarily good, and it's not necessarily a sign that the massage is working. In fact, your body may tense up in response to pain, making it harder for the therapist to reach deeper muscles.
-
What Can I expect?
Massage therapists may use fingertips, knuckles, hands, elbows, and forearms during a deep tissue massage. You may be asked to breathe deeply as the massage therapist works on tense areas. After the massage, you may feel some stiffness or soreness, but it should normally subside within a day or so. Be sure to contact your massage therapist if you have concerns or if you feel pain after having a massage. Drinking water after the massage may help to flush the metabolic waste from the tissues.

I have had recent health problems, am I still able to have sports or remedial massage?
Deep tissue massage may not be safe for people with blood clots (eg. deep vein thrombosis or thrombophlebitis), due to the risk that the clots may become dislodged. If you have blood clots or are at risk of forming blood clots, it's essential that you consult with your doctor first. If you've had recent surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or any other medical procedure, it is wise to check with your doctor before starting massage therapy. Some people with osteoporosis should avoid deep tissue massage. Massage should not be done directly over any bruising, inflamed or infected skin, skin rashes, unhealed or open wounds, tumours, abdominal hernia, fragile bones, or areas of recent fractures. If you have any condition, it's important to consult your primary care provider beforehand to find out what type of massage (if any) they would recommend. For example, people with certain conditions, such as ankylosing spondylitis, may not be able to tolerate the pain of a deep tissue massage.
-
Can I still have a massage if I am pregnant?
Pregnant people should check with their doctors first if they are considering getting a message. Deep tissue massage (or any strong pressure) should be avoided during pregnancy, but your doctor may suggest a massage therapist trained in pregnancy massage. Generally massage is not recommended during the first trimester.

I suffer with a bad back or neck, will sports or remedial massage help?
Yes, massage therapy is great for helping clients with bad backs. Initially we carry out a client consultation / assessment to try and establish the potential cause of the problem and then we have a range of techniques available to assist with relieving this problem. It is always advisable to speak with your doctor prior to beginning massage therapy.

I sit at a desk all day and suffer with neck & back pain and poor posture. Will sports / remedial massage help?
Both office desks and cars put us in biomechanically bad positions. This in turn can cause tight hip flexors, tight pectoral muscles, and forward head lean. All of these factors contribute to postural alignment issues. By massaging these problem muscles (and surrounding muscles), a great deal of pain relief is generally experienced and posture is generally improved.
